Exploring STEM Careers in the World of Sports
At STEM Sports, we show students that sports aren’t just powered by athletes—they’re powered by STEM. While many students dream of becoming professional athletes, the sports they love also offer exciting jobs and careers for people who apply STEM behind the scenes.
We identify STEM-based careers in sports, including sports engineers, data analysts, athletic trainers, biomechanics specialists, equipment designers, technology developers, and more. These professionals apply STEM skills to improve performance, enhance safety, analyze data, and design the equipment and systems that enable sports.
Next, we break those careers into the core STEM skills students are already learning in school—like problem-solving, data analysis, measurement, and critical thinking. We then connect those skills to hands-on, sports-based activities that help students see how STEM shows up on the field, in the lab, and behind the scenes.
By making these connections early, STEM Sports helps students understand that even if they don’t become a professional athlete, they can still build a career in the sport they love. Sports need thinkers, builders, and innovators—and STEM skills opens the door.
Program Profile: STEM Golf - A Fair Way to Learn STEM
We know. In some parts of the country, due to weather conditions, playing golf is difficult to imagine. Yet, the LPGA and PGA seasons begin this month. We would like to share information about our STEM Golf program.
Our STEM Golf program brings golf to life through hands-on, standards-aligned learning that connects STEM to real-world play. Students explore concepts such as force, motion, angles, energy transfer, and data analysis through engaging golf-based activities that work in classrooms, gyms, and outdoor spaces.
Designed for educators and coaches alike, STEM Golf makes learning active, inclusive, and accessible, whether students are new to the game or already familiar with it. By blending physical activity with academic rigor, the program helps students build critical-thinking skills, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for learning and movement.
